The Mahama Campaign Team has strongly criticized Asaase Radio and Daily Guide for what they describe as a misleading publication alleging that John Dramani Mahama sought election assistance from the Russian government during his recent visit to Moscow.
The controversy erupted following a report by Asaase Radio on July 11, 2024, suggesting that Mahama’s trip aimed to garner Russian support for the upcoming 2024 elections under the guise of launching a Russian version of his autobiography, ‘My First Coup D’etat’.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for Mahama, issued a statement on July 12, 2024, categorically rejecting the claims as “shadowy and unethical journalism practices” aimed at tarnishing Mahama’s reputation.
Mogtari clarified that Mahama’s visit to Russia was solely to launch the Russian language edition of his memoir at the prestigious Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
The Campaign Team emphasized that there was no truth to the allegations and urged Ghanaians to disregard them completely.
They asserted that Mahama’s activities in Russia were transparent and focused solely on literary and cultural exchanges, devoid of any political lobbying or solicitation for electoral assistance.
The statement underscored Mahama’s commitment to ethical campaigning and called on the media to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying information before publication to prevent misleading the public.
