A shooting incident in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region has left one person dead and others critically injured during Saturday’s polls.
The attack reportedly involved occupants of a V8 vehicle who opened fire amid the election process.
Preliminary investigations suggest that both the deceased and the injured were supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The incident allegedly occurred after NDC parliamentary candidate Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor reportedly declared herself the winner of the parliamentary elections.
Reports further suggest that a V8 vehicle allegedly belonging to the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson, followed the victims as they were heading home after observing the vote counting and collation exercise.
Ghana Police Service sources have confirmed that the victims were linked to the NDC candidate.
The Awutu Senya East constituency, known for previous election-related violence, has recorded similar incidents in the past.
This marks the second election-related fatality in Ghana after a similar shooting in the Tolon Constituency of the Northern Region, where one person was killed, prompting police to arrest four suspects.
