The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that over 18.6 million voters are currently registered for the upcoming December 7 elections.
This figure includes 778,447 new voters from a recent limited registration exercise, as disclosed by EC Chair Jean Mensa during her appearance before Parliament to discuss the Commission’s preparations.
To ensure all eligible voters are registered, a mop-up exercise will be conducted from August 1 to August 3, 2024, in all district offices and the newly created Guan district.
This step has necessitated rescheduling the voter exhibition exercise to August to accommodate the additional registrations.
Jean Mensa also highlighted the recruitment of 210,000 officials who will receive training to effectively perform their duties during the elections.
She emphasized that the Commission now possesses complete data on all recruited staff, which will enhance management and coordination efforts.
Furthermore, the EC Chair announced the filing fees for candidates in the upcoming elections: GHS 100,000 for presidential candidates and GHS 10,000 for parliamentary candidates. In a move to encourage greater participation, a 25% waiver on these fees will be granted to women and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
