All is set for the parliamentary primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Manhyia South Constituency today, Sunday, July 14, 2024.
The primary has been necessitated by the nomination of the four-time Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the running mate of the ruling party’s flagbearer, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.
At the Saint Louis Training College, approximately 570 delegates, including 537 polling station executives from 107 polling stations, 6 electoral area coordinators, 5 council of elders, 5 patrons, and 17 constituency executives, will cast their votes in a special delegates conference.
The nomination of NAPO, as Dr. Prempeh is popularly known, received an overwhelming 85.5% endorsement from the National Council of the party, leading to his outdooring at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9.
Following NAPO’s exit, four candidates have been cleared by the vetting committee, led by Asokwa lawmaker and Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, to contest in today’s primary.
The parliamentary candidates (PC) include Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, a chartered accountant and manager at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, who is also the brother of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Constituency Financial Secretary. He is first on the ballot.
The other candidates are Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Dr. Prempeh’s personal legal counsel and legal advisor to the Ghana Education Trust Fund; Nana Akwasi Coker Gyambibi, a royal from the Manhyia Palace and Kotoko Administrator; and James Owusu Boakye, the youngest candidate at 36 years old and an Assembly member for Manhyia proper.
According to a recent poll by Professor Smart Sarpong, Awuah is leading among the candidates, aiming to break the 28-year hold of the Apagya Royal House on the constituency seat.
