In a significant development regarding the cocaine smuggling scandal at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Eric Nartey Yeboah, popularly known as Chairman Dollar and Second Vice Chairman of the Greater Accra Region NPP, has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing.
Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah confirmed during a parliamentary session that Yeboah and other implicated Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) staff were reinstated following a thorough investigation.
The scandal, which surfaced in March 2023, involved the alleged transportation of 8.5 kilograms of cocaine on a Royal Air Maroc flight, leading to the subsequent arrest of a Dutch national in Belgium.
Initial suspicions pointed towards involvement by GACL employees, prompting intense scrutiny and demands for accountability.
Minister Asiamah assured Parliament that the internal investigation, conducted in accordance with international standards, found no evidence linking Yeboah and his colleagues to the smuggling operation.
This conclusion led to their exoneration and reinstatement to their former positions at GACL four months ago, hotfmghana has learned.
During his testimony, Minister Asiamah underscored the rigorous security measures in place at KIA, highlighting ongoing collaboration with international security agencies to combat drug trafficking.
He defended the decision not to publicize the exoneration immediately, citing procedural considerations and the need to maintain confidentiality during sensitive investigations.
The reinstatement of Chairman Dollar and his colleagues signifies a resolution to a chapter that had cast a shadow over their reputations.
As the investigation concludes with their exoneration, attention now turns to reinforcing security measures at KIA to prevent future incidents of this nature.
