A/R: Tension brews as Chief Justice petitioned over KK Sarpong chieftaincy dispute in Offinso

Mounting tensions in Offinso have led to a petition directed at Ghana’s Chief Justice and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, urging intervention in a chieftaincy dispute involving Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong (KK Sarpong).

On October 21, community leaders Abusuapanin Akwasi Amo and Opanin Robert Ahenkan submitted the petition, alleging that ongoing delays by the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs are inciting frustrations that threaten local peace.

The petition appeals for swift judicial action, warning of potential unrest if the matter remains unresolved.

The dispute arose after the death of Nana Wiafe Akenten III left the Offinso Paramount Stool vacant. Following custom, the Queenmother nominated KK Sarpong as the successor, a decision supported by the council yet contested by some Kingmakers.

These factions later endorsed a rival candidate, Nana Kwaku Amoako Poku, who has since asserted himself as chief, despite lacking customary nomination. The conflicting claims to the stool have divided the community, with increasing pressure from residents for a definitive ruling.

The petitioners allege that delays within the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, particularly from the registrar, have needlessly stalled the case. They claim the registrar initially refused to file their petition until mandated by a court order, causing prolonged setbacks. This delay, they argue, has added to a sense of injustice and raised tensions among community members who fear the unresolved dispute could escalate into conflict.

Adding to the discord, Nana Kwaku Amoako Poku continues to represent himself as the chief, defying the Queenmother’s endorsement of KK Sarpong. The petitioners assert that only swift intervention from the Chief Justice can uphold the rule of law and prevent further division, urging the judiciary to prioritize the case.

Copies of the petition have been sent to the President, Chief Justice, and key diplomatic figures, highlighting the broader implications of the case.

As Ghanaian authorities face mounting pressure to act, Offinso’s residents await an outcome that could either ease or heighten the strain on their community.
