Akufo-Addo appointed IGP Dampare on merit, not report- Peter Toobu

Peter Lanchene Toobu, Member of Parliament for Wa West and a member of the committee that investigated the leaked tape, stated that President Akufo-Addo appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare based on his confidence in Dampare’s ability, not on any report.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, Toobu emphasized the President’s prerogative in such appointments.

“The President never appointed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare based on a report,” Toobu remarked.

“He appointed George Akuffo Dampare because he believed that he could manage the police to achieve his objectives as the President of the Republic of Ghana.”

He further noted that the President’s satisfaction with the IGP’s performance is a personal judgment, and any decision regarding the IGP’s position remains the President’s prerogative.

Toobu also highlighted that the President’s actions are not necessarily directed by reports, saying, “There are several reports in this country that require the President to act but he has never done it. There are several reports not to act on a particular matter but he acted. So let’s not link this report to the rumor.”

This clarification comes amidst rumors that the IGP had been asked to proceed on leave, which the Ghana Police Service has debunked.

In a statement, the Police administration urged the public to disregard these false publications and affirmed that IGP Dampare remains dedicated to his role as mandated by President Akufo-Addo.

“The Inspector-General of Police remains committed to his patriotic duty of leading the Ghana Police Service as per the mandate given him by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo,” the statement concluded.
