The Births and Deaths Registry of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced a free mass birth registration exercise for infants aged 0–12 months.

This initiative aims to ensure that every birth occurring within the metropolis is recorded, thereby providing equal rights to identity for all newborns.

The exercise began today, July 22, 2024, and is scheduled to run until July 26, 2024 and continue to the end of November

The AMA has designated all health facilities, delivery centres, and weighing centres within the metropolis as registration points.

Speaking in an interview about the registration, the Registrar for Births and Deaths at the AMA, Mr. Ludwig Mawuli Agbezuhlor, expressed optimism about the programme’s impact highlighting its importance in bridging the gap in birth registration within the metropolis.

“This initiative is crucial in ensuring that every child born in Accra has their birth officially recorded, which is fundamental for their right to identity,” he said.

He also noted that the AMA expects to register at least 1500 births by the end of the week-long exercise.

This registration drive is part of the AMA’s broader efforts to enhance public services and ensure that all residents have access to essential civic amenities.

He urged all parents and guardians of infants aged 0–12 months to take full advantage of this free mass birth registration exercise, adding that parents could ensure their children’s legal recognition by participating.

“The registration is quick, easy, and available at all health facilities, delivery centres, and weighing centres within the metropolis. This initiative is a vital step towards guaranteeing every child’s right to an identity, so parents are strongly encouraged to register their children within the designated period from July 22 to July 26, 2024,” he said.
