Supporters of the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill have announced their intentions to protest against the Chief Justice on August 21, 2024.
Their grievances stem from what they perceive as unnecessary delays in advancing the bill to the President for approval.
The bill, which has sparked heated debate, has been stalled in the judicial process, with the Supreme Court recently postponing a decision on related injunctions.
Instead of ruling on the injunctions, the court has opted to address the matter on the day of the final judgment.
Leading the charge is Samuel Nartey George, the primary sponsor of the bill and a prominent member of the minority in Parliament.
He voiced his frustration over the delay during a visit to the National Chief Imam and the Acting President of the Osu Traditional Council.
George emphasized that the protest aims to be peaceful but firm in its demand for the bill’s progression to the President’s desk for assent.
The planned demonstration underscores the tension between the bill’s supporters and the judiciary, with proponents arguing that the Chief Justice is unduly hindering the legislative process.
According to George, the protest will call for the Chief Justice to fulfill her duties by promptly addressing the case, thereby allowing the democratic process to continue.
He articulated the urgency of the matter, stating that the nation cannot remain in limbo due to judicial inaction.
