Bagbin calls for law to limit Supreme Court Justices

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is advocating for a legislative cap on the number of Justices serving on Ghana’s Supreme Court. Currently, the nation’s constitution mandates nine judges for the Supreme Court but does not specify an upper limit, leaving room for additional appointments.

Speaker Bagbin’s call for a cap comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s recent nominations of two new judges to the Supreme Court.

These nominations were made to fill the vacancies left by the retirement of Justice Nii Ashie Kotey and the impending retirement of Justice Mariama Owusu.

The newly nominated judges are Justice Sophia Rosetta Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong.

In his remarks, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the necessity of setting a maximum limit on the number of Supreme Court Justices.

He argued that such a measure is long overdue and would provide clarity and stability in the judicial appointment process.

The Speaker’s recommendation to the House underscores the importance of establishing a ceiling on judicial appointments to the highest court.
