Benjamin Asare Effect : Ghana moves one place up in latest FIFA ranking

Ghana’s Black Stars are back on the rise, climbing one spot to 76th place in the latest FIFA rankings, while maintaining their 14th position on the African continent.

This upward momentum marks their first ranking improvement since July 2024, when they jumped from 64th to 60th.

Last year, the Black Stars experienced a slump, plummeting from 73rd to 77th in November, largely due to their winless streak in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

A home defeat to Angola and a draw with Niger in Morocco led to a six-place drop in September, followed by another three-place slide in October after a goalless draw with Sudan and a 2-0 loss in the reverse fixture.
Under coach Otto Addo, Ghana’s fortunes took a turn for the worse, ending the year in 77th place, a far cry from their 61st position in November 2023.

However, the four-time AFCON winners have now regained some ground, thanks to their winning start to the 2025 calendar, which saw them defeat Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

These victories propelled Ghana above Israel, which dropped two places in the rankings. Although the Black Stars remain unchanged in the continental rankings, sitting 14th in Africa, coach Otto Addo will be looking to build on this momentum in upcoming internationals.

Interestingly, Ghana’s lowest-ever ranking was 89th, meaning they are only 13 points away from equaling that record.

With this recent upward move, the Black Stars will be eager to continue their ascent and make a stronger case for themselves in the global football arena.
