The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is threatening to demonstrate against Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Known as NAPO, Dr. Prempeh has faced intense backlash for his comparison of President Akufo-Addo to Dr. Nkrumah, claiming that no president has developed Ghana more than Akufo-Addo.
Despite widespread criticism and calls for an apology, NAPO has stood by his statements, asserting that he merely spoke the truth.
“I have said nothing but the reality of our country’s development,” NAPO remarked in a recent interview.
His comments have sparked outrage among many Ghanaians who revere Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.
However, Sylvester Soprano, the Communications Director of the CPP, conveyed the party’s dissatisfaction during an interview with Hot 93.9 FM’s midday Taken Over News.
“We are not against NAPO making comparisons, but the disrespectful manner in which he referred to Dr. Nkrumah as ‘your Nkrumah‘ is unacceptable,” Soprano stated.
The CPP is considering organizing a demonstration to express their dissatisfaction and demand respect for Ghana’s first president.
The controversy has ignited a national debate on the legacies of past and current leaders. Many Ghanaians have taken to social media to voice their opinions, with some supporting NAPO’s perspective while others condemn it.
