The memorial service at Asomdwee Park in Accra to honor the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was marred by controversy and delays.
The discord began when Koku Anyidoho, the dismissed deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), exceeded his allotted time for his segment of the commemoration.
This delay pushed back the start of the second NDC event scheduled to mark 12 years since President Mills’ passing.
Two wreath-laying ceremonies were planned for Wednesday, July 24, to commemorate the late President who passed away at 37 Military Hospital in 2012.
The first ceremony, organized by Anyidoho, ran over its scheduled time, causing a delay for the second event organized by the NDC.
Samuel Atta-Mills, the late President’s brother, accused Koku Anyidoho of bringing in individuals he referred to as “fake family members” and instructing them to stay put, which further hindered the NDC’s event.
Samuel Atta-Mills expressed frustration over the situation, questioning why Anyidoho would engage in such disruptive practices.
In response, Mercy Araba Quarshie, the late President’s sister, condemned the actions, labeling them as “ugly and disgusting.”
She firmly stated that the individuals brought by Anyidoho were not genuine relatives, emphasizing the inappropriate nature of the situation.
The discord at the memorial service has cast a shadow over the remembrance of President Atta Mills, highlighting ongoing tensions and disputes within the political and familial spheres.
