Local governance expert, Engineer Amon Kotei, has expressed skepticism about the successful implementation of the recently launched District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).
According to him, financial constraints are likely to hinder the programme’s progress.
The government introduced DRIP yesterday with the aim of revitalizing road infrastructure across the country.
The initiative plans to provide Caterpillars, Bulldozers, and Concrete Mixers to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to repair and improve deteriorating roads. The programme will rely on the District Common Fund for financing.
Engineer Kotei, however, doubts the feasibility of the programme, citing the government’s inconsistent release of the Common Fund to the assemblies, which is already in arrears.
He shared his concerns with Don Kwabena Prah on the Hot Morning Drive, questioning how the assemblies will manage to execute the project under these financial constraints.
Contrarily, the District Chief Executive for Gomoa Central District, Mr. Ben Kojo Otoo, remains optimistic about DRIP’s success.
He revealed that a special fund, in addition to the Common Fund, will support the programme.
Mr. Otoo believes that as the initiative progresses, skeptics will come to understand its viability. He also spoke with Don Kwabena Prah on the Morning Drive, assuring that the additional funding will address the concerns raised about the programme’s implementation.
