In a shocking turn of events at Danchira in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, a driver’s mate was critically wounded after reportedly being shot by a police officer.
The incident occurred at a checkpoint located directly opposite the Danchira police station, raising serious concerns about police conduct in the area.
The victim was in a Kia truck registered GE 9643 W.
The driver, Isaac Okyere, enunciated that he answered all questions posed by a community police assistant and began to drive off when Corporal Franklin Forson, with service number 50987, without provocation, fired into the truck.
The bullets struck the driver’s mate, who is now receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
Isaac Okyere described the incident as unprovoked and traumatizing. He called for an independent inquiry and justice.
Senior officers at the Danchira Police Station have not commented officially, but initial reports suggest the shooting is being treated as an accident.
Corporal Forson is reportedly responsible for the victim’s medical expenses.
Meanwhile, further investigation by Metro News has unveiled troubling information about Corporal Forson’s conduct.
Sources reveal the police officer has a history of misconduct, including physically assaulting a senior officer attempting to document an altercation between Forson and a policewoman.
This case is currently pending before the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS).
Further, there are also allegations of excessive use of force by Forson, including firing gunshots without provocation and abusing an auto-mechanic apprentice.
In light of the recent shooting, the Danchira community is calling for a thorough investigation into the local police operations. Residents are raising concerns about alleged corruption, including bribery, extortion, and the protection of criminals, particularly land guards, by the police.
