The Domestic Violence Secretariat of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has trained 25 leaders from the Ho Central and Ho-Ahoe markets as paralegals.
Supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), this two-day training covered domestic violence law, children’s rights, parental responsibilities, women’s rights, marriage and intestate succession laws, and child labor issues, Graphic Online reports.
Following the training, the Ho Market Paralegals Association was launched in Ho, the regional capital, last Wednesday. The newly trained paralegals will provide counseling on gender-based violence and monitor child labor matters to ensure the protection of children in the market.
The Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Malonin Asibi, urged the paralegals to be role models and maintain professionalism when dealing with sensitive domestic violence issues.
She stressed the importance of confidentiality and collaboration with traders to uphold high standards of human rights in the market.
Thywill Eyra Kpe, the Volta Region Director of Gender, highlighted the prevalence of gender-based issues in the market. She assured that the ministry’s officials would continue to visit the markets to address these concerns.
The paralegals, comprised of six men and 19 women, were equipped with megaphones to aid their advocacy and sensitization activities.
