Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has set the political space alight with claims that he singlehandedly financed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2023 flagbearership bid.
Speaking to delegates in the Eastern Region, Acheampong alleged that the then–Vice President made no financial contribution during the primaries.
“Dr. Bawumia’s primaries in 2023, he didn’t bring a penny into Eastern Region. I paid every single penny for him to become flag bearer of this party. He didn’t pay a penny,” Acheampong declared.
He further insisted that every constituency executive in the region was paid $1,500, all of which he funded.
“All the constituency executives, everybody collected how much? No, the primaries 2023, the dollar, how much did you collect? $1,500. Everybody collected $1,500.”
Acheampong also recounted a recent conversation with President Akufo-Addo at a funeral in Kumasi. According to him, the President had acknowledged his significant role in the NPP’s 2016 victory.
“Yesterday, I was in Kumasi at the funeral, not him, but the Ashanti queen mother’s funeral. And I met President Akufo-Addo for dinner and, you know, he said all these? and I said, yes. Because in 2016-17, you [Akufo-Addo] said that I was the single largest contributor of you coming to power. You said it. And it is a fact.”
The Abetifi MP went further to compare his past financial support for Akufo-Addo with what he claimed to have done for Bawumia.
“2024, and I am telling you that I funded Dr. Bawumia more than I even funded Akufo-Addo,” he told delegates, adding that he had already shared this message across 14 regions.
“Yes. I’m happy that two-thirds of the people here are from the Eastern Region. And this thing that I’m going to tell you, I’ve told, this is the last region, so I’ve met 14 regions.”
His revelations come against the backdrop of a heated contest within the NPP as leading figures position themselves for the 2026 flagbearer primaries.
