Lecturers petition Mahama to probe Afenyo-Markin

Senior lecturers at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have announced their intention to petition President-elect John Dramani Mahama to investigate Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu.

The lecturers, led by Dr. Alhassan Salifu Bawah, are seeking a probe into Afenyo-Markin’s alleged misconduct, particularly during his tenure as Chairman of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

In an interview on Taken Over News, Dr. Alhassan clarified that while their concerns were previously submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), they have yet to formally petition President Akufo-Addo. They intend to submit their petition once Mahama assumes office.

“The current administration has not acted on our petition, and we are hopeful that President Mahama will take this seriously and ensure a thorough investigation,” he stated.

The lecturers allege significant misconduct, including contract inflation at GWCL, where Afenyo-Markin is said to have overseen payments totaling GHS 14.8 million to the contractor Intermerc (Gh) Ltd., for projects reportedly valued much lower. They also claim a conflict of interest, pointing to the alleged donation of a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle to Afenyo-Markin by the contractor.

“We believe this is a clear violation of Article 284 of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits public officials from engaging in activities where personal interests conflict with their official duties,” Dr. Alhassan remarked.

The lecturers are optimistic that the incoming NDC administration will take swift action to investigate the allegations and promote transparency in public service.
