Mahama slams AG for acting as NPP enforcer, neglecting Justice duties

John Mahama, the former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized Attorney General (AG) Godfred Yeboah Dame, alleging that he is functioning as a biased enforcer for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The former president lambasted Dame for prioritizing political vendettas over his duties as a Minister of State.

“He is like a legal representative of the NPP party, overly enthusiastic in pursuing political opponents,” Mahama stated in a recent interview on Accra-based Television station, TV3.

He further contended that the Attorney General’s actions demonstrate a selective approach to justice, citing the lack of interest in prosecuting significant cases like the ambulance spare parts scandal.

Mahama stressed that if the NDC wins the upcoming election, his administration will ensure accountability for both the outgoing regime and any NDC members involved in misconduct.

The handling of the ambulance procurement trial by the Attorney General has sparked widespread criticism.

This stems from concerns regarding alleged political bias, particularly in light of the recent Court of Appeal decision to acquit Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa.

Many individuals and organizations have expressed their dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of fairness and impartiality in this high-profile legal case.

“So I think that the A-G is also the Minister of Justice, he forgets that, he thinks he is just the A-G. The Minister of Justice is supposed to ensure fairness,” Mahama added.

The NDC flagbearer accused Dame of engaging in witness coaching and discussions that he believes constitute malicious prosecution.

“Anywhere in the world, with the things we have seen—coaching of witnesses, discussion with witnesses—this prosecution would be struck out as malicious prosecution. I believe this prosecution is malicious,” Mahama affirmed.

He expressed satisfaction with the Court of Appeal’s ruling, stating, “The court ruling shows that there is still justice in Ghana.”
