Former President John Dramani Mahama has described Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a visionary leader, asserting that the current government under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should not compare itself to Nkrumah.
Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for its focus on propaganda and slogans without substantial action.
“All they know is propaganda. They say they have fulfilled all their promises and they are the best government since Independence. This useless government is comparing itself to Kwame Nkrumah,” Mahama stated.
He emphasized Nkrumah’s tangible contributions, such as the Akosombo Dam, Tema Motorway, and Tema Harbour, which are crucial for Ghana’s infrastructure and development.
“You dare not compare yourself to Nkrumah, don’t try,” he added.
Mahama’s remarks, originally made during his 2020 presidential campaign, resurfaced after Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh described Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Ghana’s best president.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh claimed, “I am saying that from 1957 to now, whether you pick ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah… there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
The resurfaced video reignited the debate over leadership and development in Ghana, with Mahama’s defense of Nkrumah highlighting the enduring legacy of Ghana’s first president and the ongoing comparisons to current leadership.
