Former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has delivered a poignant Republic Day message, lamenting the current government’s decision to scrap the public holiday commemorating Ghana’s independence.
In his address, Mahama invoked the memory of Ghana’s forebears, led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, emphasizing their dedication and sacrifices in shaping the nation’s foundation.
“It is most regrettable that the current government has scrapped commemorating this important day as a public holiday,” Mahama stated, expressing disappointment over the discontinuation.
He urged citizens to use this occasion to revive the spirit of commitment and dedication that characterized Ghana’s independence struggle.
Reflecting on the significance of Republic Day, Mahama called for a collective effort to build a renewed Ghana that provides opportunities for all its citizens.
He emphasized the need to uphold unity, peace, and progress as guiding principles for national development.
“On this Republic Day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the principles of unity, peace, and progress for Ghana,” Mahama urged, rallying Ghanaians to honor the sacrifices of their predecessors by working together towards a prosperous future.

2024 Republic Day Message
As we commemorate this year’s Republic Day, I invite you to remember the dedication, sacrifices and commitment of our country’s forebears, led by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in their efforts to build a Ghana that benefits and creates opportunities for all its citizens.
It is most regrettable that the current government has scrapped commemorating this important day as a public holiday. However, as we reflect on the significance of Republic Day, let us use this as a rallying call to rekindle the spirit of dedication and commitment that our forebears demonstrated.
We must continue building a better, renewed Ghana, where opportunities are created for everyone to thrive.
