A 30-year-old man named Nana Kofi Amofa, also known as Kofi Yesu, has been detained by the Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit (PID) for attempting to sell his six-year-old niece in order to acquire a Canadian visa.
The suspect was apprehended at the Obolo estate in Gomoa Buduburam.
The police were alerted to Amofa’s intentions and deployed officers to intercept the transaction.
Undercover agents posing as buyers engaged with Amofa, who demanded GHC150,000 (1.5 billion old cedis) for the child.
During the negotiation, the officers secured enough evidence to make the arrest.
Amofa confessed that the girl, whose name has been withheld for her safety, is the daughter of his elder brother, Kwadwo Brako. Brako resides in Nyamebekyere, a village near Akyem Ayirebi in the Eastern Region.
Amofa had convinced the family to let the child stay with him under the guise of providing better educational opportunities, but his true intentions were malicious.
Following the arrest, both Amofa and the girl were handed over to the Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation.
.
The authorities are now working to ensure the child’s safety and to gather more details about the suspect’s criminal activities.
