The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Kwabena Tandoh, has called for a shift from using examinations as the sole requirement for admissions at the tertiary level.

He said because examinations are seen as the ticket to tertiary education, students engage in malpractices to pass. He said a paradigm shift would lessen the burden on students.

Speaking at a Forum in Accra as part of the 70th anniversary of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Tandoh suggested that a computer-assisted assessment should be encouraged to check examination malpractices.

The Forum was on Seventy Years of Reliable Educational Assessment—the Journey, Challenges, and the Way Forward.

The Head of Nations Office at WAEC, Wendy Addy-Lamptey said a lot more measures have been taken to secure exam papers with regards to this year’s WASSCE.

Speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholder’s forum in Accra, she said a lot more education and awareness have been carried out to curb the problems that characterize the examinations.

Mrs. Addy-Lamptey called for financial support to enable WAEC to deploy modern technology in its activities.
