The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially approved Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s choice of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate for the forthcoming elections.
This endorsement came after a series of discussions with the National Executive Council (NEC) and the National Steering Committee.
Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, serves as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and is a former Education Minister.
The decision to select NAPO is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen support within the party and throughout the nation, particularly in the Ashanti region.
NAPO’s background is rooted in the Ashanti Region, where he was born on May 23, 1968, in Ashanti New Town, Kumasi. He attended primary school at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Primary and continued his education at Prempeh College in Kumasi.
He studied Human Biology and Medicine at KNUST, earning his MB CHB in 1994. He pursued further studies in Clinical Epidemiology in the Netherlands and Leadership and Government at Harvard University. In 2002, he undertook postgraduate surgical training in the UK.
Before entering politics, NAPO was the CEO of Keyedmap Security Services Limited from 2004 to 2009 and practiced as a medical doctor.
He was also a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the United Kingdom. His extensive educational and professional background bolsters his reputation as a capable and experienced leader, enhancing his suitability for the role of running mate.
Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the NPP’s Third Vice Chairman, has stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) will meet soon to deliberate on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s selection as the running mate.
Speaking on the Hot Morning Drive, Osman emphasized the significance of the NEC’s decision, as they hold the final authority to confirm or reject Dr. Bawumia’s choice, underscoring the importance of their role in shaping the party’s leadership team for the upcoming elections.
