The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as violent acts by National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in several constituencies, obstructing Electoral Commission (EC) officials from conducting their duties.
Speaking at a press conference led by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the party appealed to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to call his supporters to order to maintain peace and stability in the ongoing electoral processes.
Highlighting specific constituencies, including Damongo, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano South West, the NPP alleged that NDC operatives were engaged in ballot box tampering and voter intimidation.
“We have credible intelligence that suggests attempts to disrupt the collation process in these areas,” said Mr. Kodua. He emphasized that such acts undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene decisively.
“We must ensure that the rights and safety of all citizens are protected. Violence has no place in our electoral process,” Mr. Kodua stated, adding that the EC must be allowed to finalize its work without intimidation.
The NPP provided detailed results from the contested constituencies, asserting that they had secured significant leads. For instance, in Akwatia, the party claims victory by over 2,000 votes, and in Obuasi East, a margin of 400 votes was reported. The party insists these figures are evidence of their legitimate wins, despite disruptions.
“In Ahafo Ano South West, we won by 677 votes, and in Techiman South, the margin was over 3,100 votes,” Mr. Kodua disclosed, appealing to the NDC to respect the mandate of the people and avoid plunging the country into chaos.
Concluding the press briefing, the NPP called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and uphold democratic norms. They urged NDC leadership to exhibit statesmanship, stating, “President Mahama, you have led this country in peace before. Let your legacy be one that fosters unity, not division.” The party reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful resolution of all electoral disputes through lawful means.
