NPP’s internal woes will deepen – KNUST lecturer warns after Delegates Conference

Senior Political Science Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, has predicted deeper cracks and intensified disunity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its recent National Delegates Conference.

He believes the party missed a key opportunity to heal internal divisions.

Speaking on Hot FM’s Hot Morning Drive with Nana Addai Kwame, popularly known as De Kay, Dr. Amakye Boateng said the NPP appeared more focused on securing power than building unity. According to him, prioritizing the election of a flagbearer over meaningful constitutional reforms aimed at cohesion could backfire on the party.

The NPP, on Saturday, July 19, adopted 54 motions during its National Delegates Conference held in Accra. The reforms included expanding the party’s electoral college and scrapping the special college system used to shortlist flagbearer aspirants.

However, Dr. Amakye Boateng argued that the changes were largely superficial and failed to address the root causes of tension within the party. He said, in his view, the motions passed are likely to “deepen the woes of the NPP” as they overlook the internal healing the party needs before the 2028 general elections.

He concluded that the party should have used the conference to champion reforms that promote inclusivity and reconciliation. “Ideally, these motions should have been about uniting the party, but unfortunately, that’s not the case,” he emphasized.
