The long-standing chieftaincy dispute in Offinso has taken a dramatic turn as the Offinsomanhemaa, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II, publicly declared the chief and queen mother at Manyhia as illegitimate and not recognised by the people of Offinso.
Her strong statement comes after Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in 2023, before a trip to the United States, rejected Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II’s nomination of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), to succeed the late Paramount Chief, Nana Awiafe Akenta III.
Otumfuo advised the Queen-mother to adhere to traditional customs and protocols in the selection process.
During an inaugural meeting of the Asanteman Council on Thursday, January 11, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II tasked the new Offinsohene, Nana Dwamena Akenten II, to look for a new candidate to replace Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II
The Asantehene said he wanted a candidate who can smoothly work with the newly enstooled Omanhene, such that she will be willing to cooperate and respond to summons from the Manhyia Palace without offering unsubstantiated excuses.
Addressing the media at a press conference on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II vehemently opposed Otumfuo’s selection, labelling it “fake.”
She asserted that the Offinso kingmakers, by their established customs, have already rightfully selected and installed their own paramount chief and queen mother.
Consequently, the Omanhemaa urged the people of Offinso to disregard any individuals presenting themselves as chief and queen mother other than those already recognised by the traditional authorities and the community.
