The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has confirmed that Parliament’s Appointment Committee has concluded its vetting of the two Supreme Court nominees presented by President Akufo-Addo.
Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong were both successfully vetted, and the committee’s report is now being prepared ahead of a full parliamentary vote.
Following the vetting, a split decision emerged within the committee, with both the majority and minority sides securing 7 votes each.
Afenyo-Markin clarified that while the committee’s deliberations are crucial, the final decision to approve or disapprove the nominees lies with the entire 275 Members of Parliament, not just the committee’s vote.
The Majority Leader noted that the report will include this tie in the committee’s votes, emphasizing the democratic process that will ultimately decide the fate of the two Supreme Court nominees.
He assured that the final verdict will reflect the collective will of Parliament.
Similarly, the Minority members of the committee, through their Chief Whip, Kwame Agbodza Governs, echoed the sentiment that the outcome rests in the hands of the full house.
Both sides await the Parliament’s final determination on the appointments of Justice Essah and Professor Oppong.
