The National Peace Council (NPC) has strongly condemned a shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Northern Region on election day, which resulted in the death of one person and injuries to another.

The incident, which marred the otherwise peaceful electoral process, has led to the arrest of four individuals by the Ghana Police Service.

In a statement issued on December 7, 2024, the NPC expressed its sympathies to the families of the victims and the affected communities.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the killing and injuring of any person during elections,” the statement read.

The NPC further called for an end to the use of firearms in electoral processes, emphasizing the importance of peaceful democratic practices.

Referencing the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact signed on November 28, 2024, the NPC urged political leaders and their supporters to uphold the commitments made to maintain peace and stability throughout the electoral period.

It also reminded the Ghana Armed Forces to honor their pledge not to station personnel at polling centers, allowing the Electoral Commission and the police to manage election security.

As vote counting continues, the NPC called on all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law, stressing the need for professionalism and integrity in the electoral process to uphold Ghana’s democratic principles.
