The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspected street robbers following an intelligence-led patrol operation at Dzorwulu in Accra, the Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed.
According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit on February 3, 2026, the suspects were arrested by officers from the Kotobabi District Police Command during a routine patrol on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Police said the patrol team, riding on a service motorbike, spotted two suspicious persons on an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike. The suspects were later identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, who was riding the motorbike, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, the pillion rider.
The police noted that both suspects were dressed in all-black attire with black helmets, and the pillion rider was seen wielding a cutlass.
Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee, leading to a chase. During the pursuit, warning shots were fired, causing the suspects to lose control of the motorbike and fall near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission. They attempted to escape on foot but were arrested by the patrol team.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of several items, including multiple mobile phones — among them iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung A21, Infinix phones, Nokia and Itel feature phones — as well as a necklace, cash amounting to GH¢2,690, and USD 2.
Police said the suspects sustained varying degrees of injuries during the arrest and were sent to the Police Hospital, where they were treated and discharged.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted to committing several street robberies within the Accra Metropolis. Statements have also been obtained from victims who identified both the suspects and their stolen phones.
The suspects have since been remanded into police custody to assist with further investigations, which have so far led to the arrest of four additional accomplices. They have been arraigned before court and are expected to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating street robbery and ensuring the safety of residents within the metropolis.
