The Ghana Police and City security officials have been alerted to arrest any persons found distributing fishes washed ashore beaches in Accra and Axim.
The directive by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development is to prevent the public from consuming the fishes which might have been poisoned.
More than 60 dolphin look-alike mammals, and large numbers of different species of fish were washed ashore along the coasts of Axim-Bewire in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, Osu in the Greater Accra Region and Keta in the Volta Region over the weekend.
In Axim-Bewire, it was reported that over 60 dolphin look-alike mammals washed ashore were counted on Sunday, April 4, 2021 by the indigenes.
Some of the large species of fish spotted in Osu in Accra were washed ashore on Friday, April 2, 2021.
In Keta in the Volta Region, plenty dead tuna also washed ashore on Sunday, April 4, 2021.
In a statement, the Ministry of Fisheries entreated the public to inspect the freshness of the eyes and gills of fish they seek to buy, which should generally be reddish in colour.
“The washed-ashore fish typically shows signs of popped out and unclear eyes, dull colouration of gills, bloating around the abdominal areas and possible oozing of foul scented fluids,” the Ministry stated.
It added that,”The Ghana Police Service and City security officials have been alerted to arrest any persons found distributing fish from these incidents into the Ghanaian food chain. The Public will be updated of the outcome of this investigation”
