Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has mandated an investigation into a video showing immigration officers assaulting a woman at the Aflao border in the Ketu South Municipality.
The incident was brought to light by MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who raised concerns about the training protocols and culture within the border facility.
The video depicts armed immigration officers physically assaulting an unarmed woman. Responding to the gravity of the situation, Bagbin directed the Interior Minister to report back to Parliament by July 29, 2024. He emphasized the expectation that public servants serve the public without resorting to force.
“Public servants are different from the armed forces. The armed forces are trained to use force as a last resort, but public servants have volunteered to serve the public without the use of force,” Bagbin stated.
He highlighted that the use of force by public servants, especially against women, is unacceptable and necessitates thorough investigation.
“What is really making it worse is on the side our ladies, it is completely uncivilized to use force against a lady. It’s not at all allowed,” Bagbin asserted. He called for a detailed inquiry into the incident, underscoring the importance of public service conducted with respect and integrity.
