Super Clash review: A dispiriting spectacle; sick Hearts players against busy for nothing Kotoko players – Reagan Mends writes

The Accra Sports Stadium, usually a cauldron of fervent energy for Ghana’s equivalent of Spain’s El Clasico between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, played host to a deeply dispiriting affair.

Fans who had flocked to witness this highly anticipated GPL matchday 30 encounter were left with what could only be described as a profoundly disappointing experience.

The final whistle blew on a goalless draw, a result that left supporters from both sides equally frustrated.

For the first time in three years, I, Reagan Mends, as the Online News Editor for Hot 93.9 FM, attended the stadium to provide our social media followers with live updates.

While we all passionately support the growth of our local league, I must be unequivocally blunt in my assessment of this match: the Hearts versus Kotoko clash today, Sunday, May 4, 2025, will unfortunately be remembered as the most lacklustre performance these two giants have ever delivered.

The preceding week had already cast a shadow over the Hearts camp. Coach Aboubakar Ouattara, in a revealing interview with Sportstiger Amuzu on Hot 93.9 FM‘s Focal Sports show, alleged internal sabotage.

He claimed that certain individuals had poisoned the players’ minds with rumours of seven impending dismissals at the league’s conclusion.

This, according to Ouattara, had severely impacted his players’ morale. Witnessing their performance today, I found myself regrettably agreeing with the coach’s assessment.

While the Hearts’ defence appeared reasonably organised, their attacking prowess was virtually nonexistent.

They moved with a strange inertia, their forward forays as menacing as a toothless dog’s growl.

It was disconcerting to see these players perform with such apparent apathy, as if they were physically or mentally unwell. The overriding impression was a distinct lack of desire to secure a victory.

Conversely, while Asante Kotoko exhibited flashes of potency across various areas of the pitch, they were far from impressive. Their energetic endeavours ultimately proved fruitless.

They were, in essence, busy achieving nothing. Their inability to convert promising build-up play into meaningful chances meant the draw they salvaged felt more like a stroke of luck than a deserved outcome.

Ultimately, Kotoko should perhaps be grateful that the Hearts players were seemingly operating far below their true capabilities.

Had Hearts displayed even a modicum of their usual fighting spirit, Kotoko’s disjointed and ultimately ineffective efforts would likely have been punished.

This Super Clash was a far cry from the thrilling encounters of the past, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of fans and serving as a stark ‘nudge’ of the inconsistencies that can plague even the most celebrated rivalries.
