Sefwi Akuraa, July 14, 2024 – The lifeless body of a three-year-old girl who went missing in Sefwi Akuraa, a farming community in the Western Region’s Amenfi West area, was found floating in an illegal mining pit.
The discovery was made three days after the child disappeared while playing outside with other children near Samreboi.
The tragic incident has raised significant concerns among community members about the rise of illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey,” in the region.
According to reports, the toddler’s mother, Maame Yaa, recounted that she left her daughter playing with other children while she went to buy watermelon. Upon her return, she found the child had vanished.
A search party was formed after hours of fruitless searching by the family and neighbors.
For three days, the community combed the area, only to find the child’s body floating in a stagnant water-filled pit, one of many dug by illegal miners in the vicinity.
The community is calling for urgent action to address and mitigate the hazardous impact of galamsey activities in the area.
