In a significant development for Ghana’s judiciary, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the approval of two esteemed legal professionals, Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, for the Supreme Court Bench.

This announcement took place during the inauguration of the Governing Board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre on July 16, 2024.

Both nominees bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the nation’s highest court.

Professor Frimpong Oppong, a prominent legal academic and Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, is renowned for his extensive experience in law, both in Ghana and internationally.

His background as an arbitrator, coupled with his role as a respected educator in law across Ghana, Europe, and the United States, positions him as a significant asset to the Supreme Court.

He will join Professor Mensah-Bonsu as one of the academic voices on the Bench, following in the footsteps of previous legal scholars like Justice Professor Date-Bah.

Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah brings her own distinguished credentials to the Supreme Court.

With a background as a State Attorney and private practitioner, she has served on both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Her involvement with the International Association of Women Judges highlights her commitment to legal excellence and advocacy for women’s rights within the judiciary.

The next step for both nominees involves a vetting process by Parliament, a constitutionally mandated procedure.

Their appointments are expected to enhance the judicial landscape in Ghana, reinforcing the commitment to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice in the country.
