The President of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA), Ilgar Rahimov, has delivered a powerful message of unity and support to the African Paralympic community, affirming that “we walk this path together, as one family.”

Speaking through an inspiring letter shared at the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) General Assembly in Accra, Rahimov described Africa as “the strength of spirit, the power of unity, and the warmth of people who move forward even when the path is not easy.”

He announced that the IBSA Africa Office is now operational, marking a major step to amplify African voices, expand opportunities, and strengthen development across all countries on the continent.

Rahimov emphasised that IBSA’s partnership with the AfPC is “not bureaucracy but a shared promise to build a stronger future.” He praised AfPC President Samson Deen for his leadership and friendship, noting that Africa grows stronger with leaders like him at the heart of the movement.

Looking ahead, he confirmed that the 2026 IBSA African Games will be a historic milestone, celebrating unity, pride, and new opportunities for young athletes.

The IBSA President also highlighted new mentorship and solidarity programmes, along with an important partnership between AIDA (Azerbaijan’s development agency) and IBSA to support coaching, training, equipment and blind sports development across Africa.

Rahimov further announced the creation of IBSA’s first Athletes’ Council, chaired by Kenyan athlete Sella, whose voice he said “represents all who train, dream, win, and inspire the world.”

Closing his message, he reminded Africa of its global leadership:

“Africa shows the world that dignity, mutual support, and hope can lift entire nations.”

  • IBSA’s renewed commitment marks a significant new chapter for Africa, as the continent prepares for major programmes, stronger partnerships, and the landmark 2026 IBSA African Games.
