Accra, the bustling capital of Ghana, is set to face increased congestion by 2030 due to significant population growth, as highlighted by recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The GSS’s latest population projections for the period 2021 to 2050 indicate a notable rise in the population across the Greater Accra region.
As of 2024, Ghana’s total projected population stands at over 33 million, an increase from 30.8 million in 2021.
The Greater Accra Region, in particular, is expected to experience a surge in the number of school-aged children, projected to reach 2.96 million by 2030. Additionally, the youth population aged 15 to 24 years is set to nearly double.
Deputy Government Statistician, Dr. Faustina Frempong, who presented the data, cautioned the government about the exponential population growth in the Greater Accra region, which covers relatively smaller land spaces.
She emphasized the need for government intervention to manage this rapid growth and mitigate potential congestion issues.
The population projections aim to provide insights into the future demographic landscape and inform policymakers, researchers, and the public about potential changes.
According to the GSS, this information is crucial for tracking the implementation of national, continental, and global development goals.
