The Regional Chairman of the Parents Association in the Ahafo Region, Mr. Nicolas Osei Mensah, has called for a review of certain aspects of the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy.
While acknowledging the policy as a commendable initiative, Mr. Mensah urged the government and the Ministry of Education to consider implementing changes in the coming years to improve its effectiveness and sustainability.
Speaking with Ahafo regional correspondent Kojo Mframa, Mr. Mensah emphasized that the Free SHS Policy should be refined to focus on dedicated and serious students.
He argued that this would ensure that the government does not squander state resources on those who may not fully benefit from the educational opportunities provided.
“The policy should target serious students so that government does not waste the resources of the state,” he stated.
Mr. Mensah also highlighted concerns about the feeding component of the Free SHS Policy. He called for a reassessment of this aspect to ensure that it meets the nutritional needs of the students and supports their overall well-being.
According to him, a review of the feeding program could lead to significant improvements in the quality and delivery of meals to students.
The government is reportedly considering the introduction of a Free SHS Bill that would obligate future administrations to continue the policy, even if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not in power.
This move is aimed at guaranteeing the longevity and consistency of the Free SHS initiative across successive governments.
In conclusion, Mr. Mensah reiterated his support for the Free SHS Policy but stressed the need for periodic reviews and adjustments. He believes that by addressing these critical areas, the policy can be enhanced to provide better educational outcomes for students across Ghana.
