President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has strongly condemned the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing that politically motivated violence undermines democracy and peace.
This statement follows the attack on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, where shots rang out, injuring the former president.
In his statement, President Akufo-Addo expressed his outrage and extended his best wishes to Trump and the American people.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Ghana, I condemn in the strongest terms the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Such acts of politically motivated violence have no place in our world and undermine the principles of democracy and peace that we all hold dear,” he said.
“We send our heartfelt best wishes to President Trump and the American people during this difficult time, and we pray for a swift and complete recovery,” the statement concluded.
During the rally, Trump was shot in the ear, describing a “whizzing sound” and feeling a “bullet ripping through the skin.”
The attack caused panic among the crowd as Secret Service agents quickly intervened. The FBI identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was shot and killed by the Secret Service during the incident.
Tragically, the attack also resulted in the death of one spectator and critically injured two others.
The incident has sparked a conversation about the importance of maintaining political stability and the need for continued vigilance against violence that threatens democratic values.
