Kumasi based Football club Asante Kotoko emerged victorious against Accra Hearts of Oak with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night, clinching the inaugural Democracy Cup trophy.
The Porcupine Warriors traveled to the capital with determination and returned to Kumasi triumphant.
In a thrilling match at Accra Sports Stadium, Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum fielded an exciting starting eleven, including some of the newly signed players.
The team made a strong start, threatening multiple times and capitalizing on a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Experienced midfielder Justice Blay stepped up and confidently converted from 12 yards, giving Asante Kotoko the lead.
The first half ended with Asante Kotoko ahead, but Hearts of Oak equalized just five minutes into the second half. New signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie scored a header in controversial circumstances, which left goalkeeper Frederick Asare needing medical attention.
The game continued with fierce competition from both sides.
Ultimately, it was Asante Kotoko who secured the win with a fantastic goal from Peter Amidu, sealing the 2-1 victory and crowning the team as Champions of the inaugural Democracy Cup.
The Democracy Cup series aimed to unite sports enthusiasts nationwide and use football as a means for Parliament to engage with citizens and encourage legislative participation.
Meanwhile, this victory has secured Asante Kotoko a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will compete against Major League Soccer (MLS) team DC United in the United States of America.
