Firefighters in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, have rescued a newborn baby who was dumped in a public latrine at Kawmeduakrom in the Obuasi East District. The shocking incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, prompting swift action from emergency responders.
According to officials, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call at approximately 10:30 p.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene. The team was led by Station Officer II Appiah Kubi under the supervision of Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO2) Peter Addai.
The rescue team used an extension ladder to carefully descend into the pit latrine. Despite the difficult conditions, the firefighters were able to retrieve the newborn safely by 11:31 p.m., drawing applause from shocked but relieved residents.
The baby, who was found alive, was rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) in Obuasi, where medical professionals are providing the necessary care. Officials have described the infant’s survival as miraculous.
Authorities have yet to identify the person responsible for the abandonment, and an investigation has been launched. Meanwhile, the GNFS has commended the team for their bravery and quick response.
