Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has disclosed that the government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as Accra International Airport, signaling a major shift in the naming of one of Ghana’s most prominent national landmarks.

He made the announcement while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament.

According to Mr Ayariga, the proposed change forms part of broader efforts by the government to ensure that the names of public institutions reflect Ghana’s democratic values and national identity.

“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader stated, adding that the move would follow due process through Parliament.

He explained that a bill will be laid before the House to give legal backing to the renaming, stressing that such decisions must be anchored in law and guided by the will of the people.

The proposal is expected to spark public debate, given the historical significance attached to the airport’s current name, with Parliament set to play a central role in the discussions once the bill is formally presented.
