Kofi Jumah threatens lawsuit over ‘cash grab’ allegation

Former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has formally demanded a retraction and public apology from Accra-based broadcaster Radio XYZ over what his legal team describes as defamatory allegations made during a recent interview.

The call stems from comments aired live on May 2, 2025, in which GIHOC’s Deputy CEO, Magdalene Ndamley, accused Mr. Jumah of financial impropriety during his tenure.

The legal notice, served by solicitor Alex Yaw Agyei, contends that the station provided a platform for unverified and damaging claims, resulting in widespread reputational harm. According to the letter, the video—hosted by Agya Wusu and shared across Radio XYZ’s Facebook and other digital platforms—has garnered over a million views.

Interestingly, while the letter places accountability squarely on the media outlet, it does not directly call for an apology from Ms. Ndamley, whose statements are at the heart of the controversy. Rather, Mr. Jumah’s lawyers insist that the broadcaster retract the content and issue an apology using the same platform and prominence within seven days, or face legal proceedings.

“My client’s instruction is to demand that you immediately cease and desist from making further defamatory statements… and that you use the same medium to retract and apologise… within seven (7) days,” the letter stated.

In the interview, Ndamley alleged that Mr. Jumah routinely withdrew GH¢40,000 every Friday without board approval, failed to return an official vehicle, and left the company in heavy debt.

“Every Friday, he instructed that GH¢40,000 be handed to him… Even when he was not at work, the amount was sent to him via mobile money,” she said.

“He says he won’t return the official car because GIHOC owes him.”
