La Chiefs threaten to join youth protests over land disputes

The chiefs and opinion leaders of La in the Greater Accra region have issued a stern warning, threatening to join the ongoing protests organized by the La Youth if their land grievances are not addressed.

The chiefs have expressed their full support for the youth’s actions, stating that they will participate in the demonstrations if the government fails to return their lands.

The protests, spearheaded by the Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice, began this week.

The groups are demonstrating against what they perceive as the unethical seizure of lands by political entities in the Greater Accra Region.

Their main concerns include the disputed Trade Fair land, the Cantonments area, and the Burma Camp region.

In addition to these areas, the coalitions have voiced their objections to the plans concerning the Prisons Service lands at Cantonments. They are particularly troubled by a private developer’s proposal to redevelop the facilities and allocate part of the land for private business purposes.

This plan, they argue, undermines the community’s interests and heritage.

Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, one of the La Chiefs, emphasized their readiness to join the demonstrations if the authorities do not address their concerns.

Speaking on the Morning Drive with Don Kwabena Prah Jnr, Nii Koofeh IV underscored the community’s determination to reclaim their lands and protect their heritage.
