Mahama cuts fuel allowances for appointees to save public funds

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive with immediate effect to cancel fuel allowances for all political appointees, signaling a renewed effort by his administration to cut down on public spending.

The announcement, made in a statement from the presidency and signed by Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized the government’s intention to redirect resources toward critical sectors of the economy.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement read, underscoring a commitment to lead by example amid tightening economic conditions.

This directive adds to a growing list of cost-cutting measures implemented under the Mahama government’s austerity agenda. These include a sharp reduction in the number of ministerial and presidential staff, along with the cancellation of satellite TV services for offices at the Jubilee House and other public institutions.

The move comes just a day before the rollout of a new GHS1.00 levy per litre of fuel, designed to help the Energy Ministry secure adequate fuel for power generation — a key priority in the government’s ongoing energy reforms.
