The Kwahu Mpraeso Circuit Court has granted bail to 27 suspects arrested in connection with the kidnapping of the Abetifi chief, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III.

The suspects, who were involved in the violent clashes that followed the alleged kidnapping attempt, were granted bail after several failed attempts.

The bail, set at GH¢200,000 with two sureties each, was secured by their defense lawyer, Nkrabea Effah Dartey. Although they have been granted bail, the suspects have not yet met the conditions and remain in police custody.

The prosecution had opposed the bail, arguing that some of the suspects reside outside the Eastern Region, including areas in Greater Accra like Russia, Sukura, and Kaneshie, which could interfere with the ongoing investigation.

Despite this, Her Honour Adwoa Akyemaa Ofosu, the presiding judge, ruled in favor of the defense, allowing the suspects to join their families under strict bail conditions. The case has been adjourned to December 19, 2024.

Background on the Incident:

The kidnapping incident occurred on November 7, when Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, along with a group of armed men who identified themselves as National Security operatives, stormed the Abetifi palace.

The group allegedly detained the chief and carried out traditional destoolment rites, including the ritual slaughter of a sheep. This sparked outrage in the community, with local youth rushing to the palace to defend their chief.

The timely intervention of police and military personnel helped prevent further violence. Yaa Asantewaa and her group were arrested, with one of the attackers reported dead and others injured.

Public outrage led to further disturbances, but order was restored when traditional leaders reaffirmed Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III as the legitimate chief.
