Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued an apology for his recent remarks regarding Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
At his unveiling in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted that no president in Ghana’s history, including Nkrumah, had outperformed President Akufo-Addo, sparking widespread criticism.
In his statement addressing the backlash, NAPO clarified that his comments reflected his personal opinion and were not intended to show disrespect towards Kwame Nkrumah or any former president of Ghana. He acknowledged the sensitivity of his remarks and expressed regret over any discomfort caused by his statement.
“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state; including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated in his apology.
Following public outcry and demands for an apology and retraction, the NPP running mate assured the public of his respect for Ghana’s historical figures and leaders.
He affirmed his commitment to constructive dialogue and engagement, aiming to uphold the dignity and legacy of all former presidents of Ghana.
