The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, has revealed that there are currently 703 conflict cases across Ghana, emphasizing the importance of embracing peace as the 2024 election approaches.
Speaking at an inter-party dialogue on mitigating election violence, Dr. Adu Gyamfi highlighted that every region except for the Eastern and Volta Regions has seen an increase in conflict cases.
He stated, “At our last review meeting with all our regional secretaries yesterday, the total number of cases being handled by the National Peace Council has moved from 298 as of January 2024 to 703 cases. Apart from the Volta Region, whose cases have dropped by 2, and the Eastern Region, which dropped by 1, all the other regions have had cases escalating.
We are yet to conclude on the number of cases in the Northern Region. It is expected that the total number of cases is likely to go beyond the 703 agreed on yesterday after the Northern Region review.”
Dr. Adu Gyamfi also mentioned that the council has established a platform to foster trust among the various political parties to ensure peace as the general elections approach.
“These reported cases are aside from the daily political tension and occurrences. As part of the process of building trust among the political parties, the political parties’ trust-building platform was created by the National Peace Council for the parties to meet regularly to discuss issues of concern,” he explained.
This initiative aims to address the rising conflict cases and promote dialogue and cooperation among political parties to maintain peace and stability in the country during the election period.
