The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to refrain from making further appointments to the country’s superior courts.
This request comes in response to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recommendation of five judges for nomination to the Supreme Court.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC, expressed concern that President Akufo-Addo had already appointed numerous loyalists of the NPP to the courts, suggesting there was no need for additional nominations.
Kwetey emphasized that the current judiciary had sufficient judges to handle judicial matters effectively.
Given the upcoming general elections, he argued that any appointments with significant implications for Ghana’s constitutional democracy should be deferred to the next president.
“With general elections scheduled in a few months, we believe President Akufo-Addo should immediately suspend plans for further appointments to the superior courts. He has already appointed too many of his loyalists, which has raised concerns among many Ghanaians committed to democracy,” Kwetey stated.
