Security analyst Adam Bonaa has voiced strong concerns regarding the relationship between the Electoral Commission (EC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) amidst growing calls for a voters’ audit.
In an interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive with Don Kwabena Prah, Bonaa emphasized that an audit is a straightforward and necessary step to ensure transparency in the electoral process. He highlighted the importance of accountability, particularly as the country prepares for its upcoming elections.
Bonaa further pointed out the irony in the current EC chairperson, Jean Mensa, leading the commission amid these concerns. He remarked that Mensa herself had once called for transparency in electoral matters when she was not yet part of the EC, a clear indication of how vital openness is to the democratic process.
“The audit is a simple solution for transparency and accountability. The current EC chair, Jean Mensa, also requested for transparency at a time she wasn’t part of the EC,” Bonaa said.
Bonaa was particularly critical of the NPP’s response to the audit demand made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), labeling the party’s threat to retaliate if the EC approved the audit as reckless. He explained that such statements only lend credibility to claims that the EC is in collusion with the NPP.
“Such statements by the NPP make the ‘EC in bed with NPP’ slogan look credible,” Bonaa added.
He called on the EC to address the concerns raised not only by the NDC but by the broader Ghanaian public to preserve trust in the electoral process.
Bonaa concluded by urging the EC to remain transparent and accountable, stating, “If Ghanaians indeed want change, then the EC must come clean to elect the best candidate.”
He emphasized that elections should reflect the will of the people, and transparency is key to ensuring the right leaders are chosen.
